One day, Bear left for work and never came back.

His wife hardly noticed.  They had been fighting recently. She only realized something was wrong when he failed to leave her a check for the weekly groceries.

Bear never took up much space, spoke very little and was easy to miss. She walked through the house calling out his name and received only a distorted echo of her voice in return. His clothes were still stacked and hung neatly in the spare bedroom.

The only thing missing was the ceramic statuette of a leaping rainbow trout from his bedside table.

  1. This is an eerie story, Craig. I love the little details: the spare bedroom, the idea that his name – Bear – is incongruous with the small space he takes up, even what he did take … it’s like the start of a great mystery. Round of applause from me.
