Seventeen Dollars

The cash register banged open and the gas station clerk took two steps to the right with his hands at his ears before the man on the other side of the counter shot him. The gunman scrambled to reach across and in the till.

He came away with seventeen dollars.

The city streets were so quiet you could hear the streetlights hum lullabies. In some dark alley, one man stabbed another in the chest. He twisted the blade, pulled it free, grunted, wiped it on the dead man’s jacket and went through his pockets.

He came away with seventeen dollars.

The cop stood behind the opened car door, aimed his revolver and told the crazy to just put the knife down, everything would be fine. The crazy charged, the cop fired twice. He kicked away the knife and searched the body for other weapons.

He came away with seventeen dollars.
