One, two, three, four, five, six, seven.

He bit into the electrical tape and tore it from the spool. He reached over and bound her ankles.

One, two, three, four, five, six, seven.

He made sure the tape was secure, sat on a crate against the basement wall, and pulled his ski mask down. The chloroform would be wearing off soon and he wanted a good view of her reaction as she woke up.

Upstairs, their friends hung balloons and streamers; they sipped beer and whispered gossip, lit the twenty-three candles on the cake and waited to yell out surprise.
