Skip, A Stone, A Beat

She made me follow her to the top of the  low hills out behind town. The clouds hung low and thick, and they looked more like slow waves slapping at a sandy beach than anything.

“I mean,” she started to say.

I was staring across the horizon and didn’t hear her. “What?”

She looked away and then stuck her face in the between her arms hooked around her knees.

“I think I love you, I do, but how can I be sure if I’ve never tried to love anyone else?”

I tossed a pebble sidearm, hoping it would maybe skip.
