Owl and Raccoon arrived for the first day of the new school year. They were jumbled into the gym with everyone else, full of muted excitement and whispers and smiles and unease. The principal got all the children to calm and sit down. He said they would do this differently this year, that the classes needed to be split in two, as more students enrolled than ever before.
He called their names and sent them to opposite sides of the gym. Owl and Raccoon stared at each other, separated by an abyss of vinyl flooring marred with years of scuffmarks.
