“It’s not that I don’t love him anymore, I do. I always will. In my own way,” she said to the bathroom door, “It’s just, well, an empty feeling, a deep pit. I suppose it’s rather hard to explain.”

She lay back on the still-made, uncomfortable hotel bed and waited.
