Things That Go Bump

Rabbit shifted in her sleep, and felt something soft and damp and sticky brush against the underside of her foot. Startled, she drew her legs in, woke up, and slowly opened her eyes.

The comforter was mounded beside her, kicked off sometime in the night. Straining to see in the dark, the pile of blankets seemed to expand and retract, just the smallest bit. She listened, convinced herself short, faint breaths were coming from underneath.

Rabbit jumped, hit the floor, turned on the lamp, threw back the covers and discovered her  dog and his half-chewed rawhide in her bed.
