“I’ve been running this god damned supermarket for ten years now and you think you can just fire me?” Amber took a minute to light a cigarette and exhale forcefully; using it as a spear to drive him leaning back in his chair. She tried to remember how she’d stuck around this long, wearing this awful brown apron, running from one problem to the next.

“There’s nothing we can do, we’ve been bought out. A Nationwide is moving in,” Browning said. “Sorry.”

She started working out how to steal this week’s payroll. It was easy. She should’ve done it sooner.
