Things Left Unfinished

“Something wrong with your food?”

Raccoon pushed a burnt sausage to the side of his plate and said there wasn’t.

“You better stop playing with it,” his mom said.“And eat.”

A truck door slammed shut and he winced.

“Go,” his mom said.

He ran out of the kitchen and was climbing out his bedroom window when he heard his father start yelling. Keeping low, Raccoon ran across the backyard and tossed peddles at Owl’s window. When the other boy stuck his head past the sill, he signaled him to come down.

Then they started down the lane to town.
