Dzinski let the telephone ring. After six times, whoever was calling gave up. He unfolded the newspaper, turning the pages until he found a short article. A single column.

Police responded to an anonymous call and discovered the body of Evelyn Wright in her apartment. There were no suspects, no signs of struggle, nothing seemed to be missing, but they weren’t ready to call off the investigation just yet.

The telephone rang again.

He imagined some desperate spirit calling. Looking for justice. Looking for truth.

He hadn’t seen either in a long while.

The god damned thing just kept ringing.
