Of The Coffin

The vaquero politely refused the proffered horse. His host, the venerable head of a large ranch, who hoped to find his missing daughter, was at first embarrassed to have his gift refused, and then angry at the insult.

The host drew his pistol, and his wife stood sternly in between the two men, making her husband drink a half-full tumbler of whisky and calm down. The vaquero pointed to the whorl on the beast’s withers and said he knew it was likely superstition, but he could still not ride that horse without believing he would be killed in the saddle.
