Apotropaic

They scratched wards into the door frames and floorboards. Spread salt along the windowsills. Mixed turmeric in the glasses of milk they drank before bed.

But still the demons came.

They nailed the closet doors shut. They burned sage in the fireplace and throughout their home. They invited priests, clerics, soothsayers, cunning folk, and mediums to try to banish the spirits.

But still the demons came.

They stopped eating and sleeping. Sallow skin, hollow eyes, and empty minds. Worried the demons could soon escape, they doused their home in kerosene, and set it aflame, hoping that would end this torment.
