All the churches rang their bells in harmony to play Here Comes the Sun. The Beatles? Anyway, we had to use powdered sugar in our coffee because that’s all we had. Sweaters and scarves wrapped tight, and mittened hands did their best to hold the mugs. They kept slipping.
The bells rang all morning. We sat on the front steps and tried to guess how many churches participated in the song. And why they were doing it.
It started snowing. Fat wet flakes fell, we held our tongues out to catch them.
Somewhere in that moment, the bells stopped ringing.
