Incubate

I made them wait a few days after they first told me about it. But they were sure the mother bird wouldn’t return, so I let the kids bring the nest inside. Two little blue eggs.

They put in a cardboard box, under a light bulb, and wrapped the whole thing in a blanket. I told them tinfoil was safer and more effective.

The eggs never hatched. The mother must have known. Instinct, maybe. We let the kids believe they would, eventually. Kept telling them to give it a few more days. Figured it couldn’t hurt.

It did, though. Jesus.
