Swimmingly

She knew she wasn’t going to get a straight answer out of him and plunged down. She let the air escape her lungs, bubbles heading up as she sank deeper. A fish swam past her. Tickling her toes. She wondered what kind it was. She wondered why she hadn’t ever been curious about fish before. Her lungs started to hurt. She kicked and paddled and soon broke the surface.

“Where’d you go?” he asked.

She looked at him. Squinting in the sun reflecting off the lake. She heard birds circling overhead.

“What?” she asked, but didn’t wait for an answer.
